Striking Writers May Work on Games

The ongoing Writer’s Guild strike may soon impact even the games industry. While most of the copy writers working on games are not a part of the guild, via Eurogamer comes a Variety article about a possible Hollywood writer’s migration to other media. “While the WGA has made no secret that it would like to eventually cover vidgame writing, it hasn’t pushed the issue yet and is allowing members to work on games during the strike. ‘It has been an interesting shift,” says one tenpercenter who focuses on vidgames. “The literary agents are now saying, ‘Why don’t we get our clients over there during the strike?’ even though in the past they thought the money wasn’t good enough or the work is too demanding.’”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Post Turkey Day Game News Highlights
So you ate too much turkey and stuffing and sweet potatoes drizzled in butter and brown sugar and maybe topped off with a big snowy pile of lightly seared marshmallows (guess what my favorite side dish is). Or maybe you’re…

Xbox 360 Updates Social Features, Back Compat
Microsoft is gearing up for another big update to Xbox Live, and soon they’ll be offering a friend of a friend feature that will allow users to peruse their friends’ friend lists. It’s a voluntary service, and is gated by your age to avoid any parental fears. If you’d rather turn it off ahead of time, they already have a dedicated site set up for that purpose. (Gamertag login required.) That update will be dropping on December 4th. Relatedly, they’re also rolling out a whole bunch of new backwards compatability options for your old Xbox games. Highlights include support for: Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance, Burnout 2: Point of Impact, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, Indiana Jones And The Emperors Tomb, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Syberia II, The Bard’s Tale, Worms 3D. There’s also support for a slew of sports titles going all the way back to 2003.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

A Chat With the Voice of Mario
An anonymous reader writes “CNETTV.co.uk has up a video interview with Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario. Charles talks about flying out to Japan to record five games, including Super Mario Galaxy, and about his gaming experiences pre-Mario, which were made up of Pong, Pac-Man and Tank. The most interesting part of the video has to be when Charles discusses how he came up with the voice of Mario, which didn’t exactly start off sounding like the Mario we know and love today.”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

On the Process of Effecting Mass
Dean Takahashi, of the San Jose Mercury News, has up a lengthy interview with Mass Effect project director Casey Hudson on the almost four-year-long development of the title. The two men go into some detail on BioWare’s approach to game creation, as well as discussing the numerous technical and storytelling leaps they made with the game. “Hudson said, ‘One thing I’m hoping people see in it is how much more there is for a player to make decisions on. It makes it really hard for us to develop, given the customization that we make possible in the game. For example, from the beginning, you are not pre-made as a character. You can play Commander Shepard. But you can also create your own character, male or female. You can choose your special abilities. Those are ways to make your game different and unique. These are things that make it much harder for us to make the game so that it is consistent all the way through, given your choices.’”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Games Industry Growth Outpacing US Economy
Gamasutra is reporting that the Entertainment Software Association believes the games industry has outstripped the US economy as a whole. In fact, the group found that the industry grew by an astonishing 17% between 2003-2006, some 13% faster than the general US economy. “The ESA states that the video game industry contributed $3.8 billion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product in 2006. Though 24,000 are directly employed, according to the report in total 80,000 are employed directly and indirectly by the industry in 31 states and U.S.-based game industry employees received a total of $2.2 billion in compensation. Predictably, California is the largest employer in the video game industry, accounting for around 40% of the nation’s industry jobs. California industry growth was 12.3% last year, which the ESA claims is “nearly three times faster” than the state’s overall growth.”Read more of this story at Slashdot.
