Sex Pistols Reunite For Guitar Hero III

1up is reporting that the Sex Pistols are getting the band back together for at least one recording session. They’re laying down a master track for the upcoming Guitar Hero III, for the song ‘Anarchy in the U.K.’. “Original members John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), Steve Jones, and Paul Cook hit the studio together for the first time in 30 years, hooking up with original producer Chris Thomas to maintain the feel of the recording. Additionally, the original analog sound desk, built in 1969 for producer George Martin at Air Studios in London, was utilized for aural authenticity.”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

MIT Hacks Harvard For Halo, Game Prompts Lots of Sick Days
yonari writes “Early on the morning before the Halo 3 release, John Harvard donned a Mjolnir helmet and a beaver emblem, and carried an assault rifle on his left shoulder, apparently acquired from the UNSC Engineering Division.” The Washington Post also points out that a lot of folks took sick days on Tuesday as a consequence of the game’s release. “Some local workers won’t have to skip out on the office to play the game. At some companies that offer video games as a break room activity, Halo 3 was pre-ordered months ago. The Motley Fool, the Alexandria investment advisory firm, is expecting its copy of the game to arrive from Amazon.com soon. Same for Platinum Solutions, a Reston software consulting firm.”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Valve Reevaluates Episodic Gaming
Dr. Eggman writes “CVG has a recent article on Valve’s future plans for episodic gaming. After the third episode of Half-Life 2 is out, Valve plans to sit down with the community and figure out what is working and what’s not. Gabe Newell also wants to spend time with Telltale Games and Blizzard, both developers of episodic and episodic-like game content. It it worth it to try to release content on an episodic basis? ‘We just want to sit down with three examples in front of us and talk it over with gamers to find out what they would like us to do next.’”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Ultima Online Celebrates 10 Years
The well known EA-run MMORPG Ultima Online is now celebrating its ten year anniversary. At the time, Gamespot referred to the game as a ‘buggy, unplayable mess.’ Here’s to another ten years, UO. ‘In recognition of the game’s 10 year anniversary, EA has announced the “Return to Britannia” initiative. Past subscribers of the game can download the free Kingdom Reborn update through Ultima Online’s Web site, and then play the game gratis until October 9. EA will also be hosting a number of events during this period, including a monster hunt where players can win loot such as an ankh pendant necklace, a map of Brittania, an Ultima Online commemorative sculpture, and a virtue armor set.’ I think it’s also worth pointing out that UO isn’t the first big graphical game to hit ten years; that would be Meridian 59.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Sony Shifting PS3 Marketing to Focus on Blu-Ray
Tabernaque86 writes “What started as joke among gamers Sony is now using as a Christmas advertising campaign. Kaz Hirai, president of the games unit, has been quoted as saying that the PlayStation 3 ‘makes a great Blu-Ray player’. That theme will be central to a wave of ads in North America and Europe. From the article: ‘Sony on Thursday disappointed analysts by failing to cut the PS3’s price, but Mr Hirai did not rule out a future price cut. “Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me,” he said. A price cut would have a “real impact” on sales only if there were enough software titles to support the PS3. But analysts were skeptical and said Sony could miss its shipment targets for the year. “Without a price cut close to Christmas, reaching 11m shipments is going to be very tough,” said David Gibson, analyst at Macquarie in Tokyo.’” This is regrettable, too, because there really are a number of strong titles coming out for the console this year.Read more of this story at Slashdot.
