Striking Writers May Work on Games
The ongoing Writer’s Guild strike may soon impact even the games industry. While most of the copy writers working on games are not a part of the guild, via Eurogamer comes a Variety article about a possible Hollywood writer’s migration to other media. “While the WGA has made no secret that it would like to eventually cover vidgame writing, it hasn’t pushed the issue yet and is allowing members to work on games during the strike. ‘It has been an interesting shift,” says one tenpercenter who focuses on vidgames. “The literary agents are now saying, ‘Why don’t we get our clients over there during the strike?’ even though in the past they thought the money wasn’t good enough or the work is too demanding.’”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Area 51’s Lead Designer Admits Project Was ‘F’d Up’
Wired has up an interview with Blacksite: Area 51’s lead designer Harvey Smith. Smith is well known for his work on great games like Deus Ex and System Shock, but his latest title is getting a lot of negative press. In the interview, Smith as much as admits the team failed in their quest to make a great game. “‘We got hammered so hard [by reviewers], and we deserved it … Everyone was forced to share tech. It took eight months to get one thing working.’ He wouldn’t specify what that one thing was, but did note that technical problems set the team back, time and time again. Another of Smith’s complaints was ‘the fact that we had four days to Orange Box something,’ meaning to fix and polish a level. Smith called this ‘completely reprehensible.’” Kind of shocking to see this kind of honesty from the games industry.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Deus Ex 3 Announced
Gamasutra has the news that Eidos is already hard at work on a Deus Ex 3 . The company announced this project along with a brand-new studio in Montreal, which will be developing the title. “According to [General Manager Stéphane D’Astous], Eidos Montreal currently has two groups — a Q&A group that is responsible for testing all of the developer’s games from anywhere in the world, and an in-house development team that D’Astous says has just passed proof of concept for Deus Ex 3. ‘This game was very highly rated at its release in 2000, and we have this great huge mandate to do the third one, and everybody is very excited,’ added D’Astous”Read more of this story at Slashdot.
